Welcome to the Franklin Middle School. We are now coming to the end of the first quarter of school. Boy time certainly flies around here. We have had some extremely exciting things occur here.
We had the author of Discover Your Dragon, Don Hyun Kiolbassa visit our school. He did a school wide assembly on bullying and worked with our seventh and eighth graders during the rest of our school day. Hard work, Health, Balance, Skills and Goals are some of the lessons learned at the Shaolin Temple. Don was a gold medalist in martial arts. He is an accomplished lawyer and CPA. He also appears in many popular movies and video games. The children and staff were really impressed with his presentation. He will be returning in the spring.
We have been working with Plymouth State University and the TIGER Program again this year. They will be returning in November to make one school wide presentation and several workshops to our student body. The TIGER program is based on bullying and ties into our school programs and is a continuation of our BPAC group from last year.
The Student Leadership Council is off to another great school year. We currently have over one hundred students involved in this program. The Student Leadership Council is overseen by two staff members. They are helping the children to step up into a leadership role. The students work on numerous committees under this heading. They have students that work on setting up for programs, some that work on food drives, a group dealing with bullying to name a few. This is such an exciting organization. They have a contact page on the website. Please visit it for current happenings.
The staff is continuing to work on developing new and more enriching programs for the children here at FMS. This year we have started a new Jazz Band and Glee Club. For more information please contact Miss Rockenhauser our music instructor at email@example.com.
The Media Center has had many changes too. Some are still in the development stage but are exciting as well. We are implementing a student check out system where children will sign out books and return them on their own. The library is now open all day long under the supervision of a library assistant. New books have been shelved and students are using the library on a daily basis. Many staff has posted their favorite books for children to see the interest of their teachers as well. Reading for enjoyment is most important and we are promoting a friendly user friendly library.
Ask you children what they are learning about in all of their classes. With the changes happening here to move towards the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) things are changing daily. You should also look at the link to School Home Newsline. The staff updates their information weekly about their classes. It is so exciting to offer all of these new things to our children. The parent portal is also open this year where you can track your student’s progress weekly. Teachers are updating the information on Wednesday each week. If you need assistance please contact Mrs. Husband at 934-5828 ext. 2226.
Please take the time to visit the school and become an active member in your child’s education. I look forward to meeting you and reconnecting with many of you again. Reminder that PTO meetings are the second Monday of every month unless it is a holiday then it falls on the Tuesday. They start at 6 PM in the Media Center.
